Community Based Redevelopment
Redevelopment for the people by the people.
Neighborhoods like Haverford North and Belmont in West Philly have gotten the short end of the stick for decades and decades. And now neighborhoods like these are facing gentrification. The people how live there are getting priced out and pushed out of neighborhoods that they have called home for decades. A community based redevelopment project in this neighborhood is an alternative that would work for most if not all of the current residents. As you know many of your neighbors don't own their own homes. And many homeowners in the neighborhood have houses that need work. If the community were able to acquire the rental houses in the neighborhood along with the vacant houses and vacant lots, they would be able to completely renovate those houses as well as the vacant houses. The community could then sell those houses to the people who had been renting there. Since the community would be renovating the houses on a mass scale, and without taking a profit, they could sell the house at a low price. So the old renters/new owners would the same amount on their mortgage as they did in rent. And they would have a fixed rate 30 year mortgage at under a 3% interest rate. No money down. And their homes will have been completely renovated. This may seem a little crazy. But it is possible. And more possible today than it has ever been. And it gets better.
The system is broken and has been for a long time. It's time to fix it.
